Is Environment Could Be a Cause Of Diseases

 Environment and Environmental Health

Environment

is defined as the sum total of all living and non-living elements and their effects and that influence human life

Examples of living and non-living elements are:

  • Living/biotic elements
animals, plants, forests, fisheries,
and birds.
  • Non-living /abiotic  elements
include water, Land
Sunlight, rocks and air.

What does environment do:

The environment offers resources for production and encompasses both renewable and non-renewable resources for example ,Wood for furniture
Provides the supply of resource

Sustains life :

The environment includes the sun, soil, water, air which are essential for human life and also sustains life by  by providing genetics and biodiversity .

Assimilates waste :

The environment assimilate waste by production and consumption activities, generates waste that occurs mostly in the form of garbage and helps in getting rid of garbage.

 Enhances the quality of life

The environment provides a sense of comfortable feeling as the humanity enjoy the beauty of nature that includes rivers, mountains and deserts.

Despite the environment has many benefits that boost the public health but also it is full of environmental toxins and contaminants that are physical, chemical and biological pollutants that can cause health problems such as respiratory diseases, heart disease and some types of cancer.

Low socioeconomic status.

poor people in rural areas are mere likely to live in polluted areas and have unsafe drinking water

List of diseases caused by the environment :

There are physical factors in the environment  that serve as mainstream cause of diseases

  • Cancer.
  • Cardiovascular diseases.
  • Neurological brain disorders.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Kidney diseases.
  • Liver diseases.
  • Skin diseases
  • Respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis and COPD .

Smoking is the leader cause of lung cancer too.
Other risk factors are less predominant and include exposure to second-hand- smoke , radon gas, asbestos and air pollution.

Cancer caused by exposure to carcinogenic airborne particles such as those released from burning fossil fuels
Cancer can be developed in any organ of the body. But it is most commonly formed in the lungs
Non-small cell lung cancer is a more common type of lung Cancer,  it accounts for about 80% of all cases. It is generally less aggressive than small cell lung cancer and has a better prognosis.
Additionally, air pollution has been linked to a variety of neurological disorders as well. Some of illnesses include Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson disease.

Air pollution has been linked to a variety of neurological disorders as well. Some of illnesses include Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson disease.

Alzheimer's disease neuro-degenerative disorder leads to memory loss & cognitive decline.
Studies have shown that air pollution can accelerate  progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Parkinson's disease is neurodegenerative brain disorder. It affects movement and coordination. Air Pollution has been linked to an increased risk of developing Parkinson disease.

12 components of environmental health?

=> Environmental health practice
  • waste management
  • food Control and hygiene
  • Test and vector Control.
  • Environmental health control of housing
  • and sanitation
  • Epidemiological health control of housing and
  • Sanitation .
  • Epidemiological investigation and control
  • Air quality management
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Water resources management and sanitation.

Four Pillars of environmental studies

,actually refers to four distinct areas = human, social ,economic and environmental areas known as
the four pillars of sustainability.

Sustainability

is broadly used to indicate programs, initiatives and actions aimed at the preservation of a particular resource.

 Environmental risks :

 1. Air pollution .
2. Chemical safety
 3.water sanitation
 4.Hygiene.
5.Radiation.

Four Ps of environment :

1.People.
2.Planet.
3.prosperity.
4.plastics.

Environmental health

refers to aspects of human health
(including quality of life) that are determined by physical, chemical, biological, Social and psychosocial factors in the environment.

Definition of community and environmental health:

Community health aims to maintain & improve health through organized community efforts. Environmental health comprises factors like pollution that affect human health.

Basic principles of environmental health?

Ethical principles of sustainability, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, Community and precautionary substitution provide a framework that can be used to evaluate environmental chemicals.

Role of Environmental health professionals could be involved in one or more of the following:

Working with other health professionals on programs to improve health and well being.
Protection of the public from environmental hazards Investigating
Compliant about neighborhood noise and other nuisance.

Environmental health centers on the relationship between people and and other environment .
It is about how our surrounding affects our
Well being. It looks at the connection between people and environment they live in .
